Keeping your site safe

Modern cars are incredibly difficult to break in to and steal, so much so that thieves often find it easier to break in to a house and steal the car keys instead. Hackers targeting your website are faced with a similar problem when it comes to getting access to your website.

Few hackers target the web host directly, with all the money web hosts such as ourselves spend on security and monitoring it is simply too difficult to gain access. Instead they go directly after the webmaster by downloading a virus on to their PC and getting the FTP log in details so often stored as an unprotected flat text file within software such as Filezilla.

What do they do with the information?

Once they have direct access to your website’s files there are any number of actions they can take:

- Insert links in to your site & create link farms
- Capture your member’s information
- Links to malware
- Spread viruses
- Destroy your site

How do you stop them?

Because they are targeting your PC make sure your virus protection up to date. Don’t put off the updates until ‘next week’ or when you can be bothered, get in to a routine of installing the latest patches e.g. on a Sunday afternoon whilst you are out or at night when you are asleep.

The easiest way to prevent access is to not have the information to be found in the first place. Don’t store log in details on your local PC unprotected e.g. in the FTP software’s auto login. Having to manually log in will literally add 10 seconds to your day and when you think of it like that its time well spent if it means your site in not compromised.

Regularly change your FTP password with a strong, and ideally random, password using capitals, numbers and extra characters. As well as a strong password, rather than have FTP access permanently enabled disable FTP access when you don’t need it.

As mentioned above, hackers will identify the vulnerabilities found within popular 3rd party software such as WordPress. If you use any CMS that allows plug-ins to be installed make sure you only get them from trusted sources and research them fully online (i.e. don’t do it blindly). This is also true of any 3rd party scripts you choose to use from sites such as hotscripts.com.

How to monitor if your site has been hacked?

One of the most popular reasons hackers go after sites is to essentially create a massive link farm to boost the search ranking of another site they own which is the money maker. A good example of this in action is the Haiti disaster which was targeted by fraudsters capturing bank details of people wanting to donate money to the relief programs. Many started by searching for charities through Google and clicking on the highest ranked sites, some of which were fraudsters boosted by their hacked site links. Monitor your website’s outbound links by checking Google webmaster tools or using a tool like http://validator.w3.org/checklink. It is also worth checking your directory in an FTP client on regular basis to spot any irregularities or any files/ folders that you didn’t create.

What to do about it if you have been hacked?

If you find out your site has been hacked the first step is to turn off FTP access to prevent them gaining further access. Once you have done that change your FTP log in details and run a full virus scan on your PC.

To remove any changes they may have made, rather than manually editing your files and risk missing anything, restore the website using the version you have backed up. Backing up your website is really quick and easy and completely free through your control panel. To make sure you always have the latest version of your site we strongly recommend you back up your website using this facility whenever you make a change to your website.

Backing up your website files:
- Log in to your hosting control panel
- In ‘files’ click on ‘backup/restore‘
- Follow the on screen instructions

Backing up your database:
- Log in to your hosting control panel
- In ‘Web tools’ click on ‘MySQL Databases‘
- In ‘Manage MySQL Databases’ choose which databases you want to back up and click ‘Now’

You can also download and store a local copy of your database through phpMyAdmin using the ‘Export’ function.

Backing up your website and databases literally takes a couple of clicks of the mouse and can save a lot of pain and heartache down the line!

New VPS product launch!

nullWe are excited to announce the launch of our brand new range of Virtual Private Servers (VPS). Our VPS have been designed to provide your website with advanced hosting at an affordable price. If you have a busy, demanding or mission-critical website, use our VPS hosting to take control of your resources.

VPS has been a popular request for a while now, and we’ve had plenty of tweets, comments, emails and even tickets about how you just can’t wait to get your hands on one. If that sounds like you, you can head over to our VPS specs and ordering page without looking back.

What are VPS?

VPS (aka ‘virtual private servers’ or ‘virtual servers’) bridge the gap between shared web hosting and dedicated servers. A physical server is divided into various virtual servers so you benefit from enhanced stability and control over what’s installed, but the cost is much lower than a full dedicated server with the same spec. VPS provide a flexible, scalable hosting option for those looking for greater control over their websites.

Why choose a VPS?

There are many reasons to choose a virtual private server from The Hosting Folks, including:

• Power: A VPS handles intensive software (such as Magento) with ease.
• Cost effectiveness: Our VPS start at just £9.99 per month and you can host multiple websites with enhanced security and stability.
• Instant, free set up: Combined with our standard ‘cancel anytime’ policy and no hidden costs.

Specs and pricing

We know that money is on a lot of people’s minds, so we’ve made our prices as competitive as possible without compromising on quality. Our base VPS package starts from just £9.99 per month, and includes unlimited bandwidth, RAID 10, and a whole lot more.

Our VPS are brand new Dell PowerEdge servers housed in our state-of-the-art UK data centre, and you still get the same 24/7 UK support along with all the other advantages of hosting with The Hosting Flks. You can choose from various Windows or Linux operating systems, and we’ll add more based on popular demand.

Using QR codes to promote your website…

QR codes – or ’quick response’ codes – are becoming widely popular in physical marketing and media. They offer the opportunity to link print and digital media together, instead of typing in long url’s. You can simply scan a code with your phone to instantly open a web page, show a phone number

Scan this QR code and see where it takes you!

, connect to a wireless network and much more. There are plenty of QR code apps across the major brands, and QR codes will also work with a number of standard camera phones. If you’re interested in finding out more about the technical aspects of QR codes, check out the Wikipedia article.

How can I make QR codes?
Most of the ideas below involve just creating a QR code of your URL, which is free and easy to do using this tool.

How can QR codes be used?
QR codes can be used in more ways than one might think, for example, scavenger hunts, word and number games, advertising, networking and much more. One major advantage of a QR codes is that you can update prices, details and other information on the website behind the QR code without having to re-print leaflets, posters or advertisements. They’re also small, take up less room than a list of features or prices, and you can even gain traffic statistics from them.

Using QR codes on signs, posters, leaflets etc.
As a way to include more information for people to view in real-time, without having the cost of re-printing material. As well as providing more details or a quick link to your website, you could also offer exclusive discount codes. If you have a physical shop, customers could show you the code when they come to purchase in store rather than have to print coupons out, or you could even automate the entire discount process online.

On business cards
A great way to get your contact details or website across to potential clients, who can view them straight away. You can use your phone number or email address in place of an URL to encourage direct communication without the person having to laboriously type in your details and save them for later.

To expand on product details
Put QR codes next to the prices on your products for customers to scan and find out more information about the product (such as origins, stock availability etc.), or even use it to suggest other products for cross-selling and up-selling.

In your shop window
Attract passers-by with a QR code offering a mysterious or limited-edition discount code that they have to scan to reveal.

On letterheads and invoices
Remind people who you are after they’ve met you or used your services, and help them access your website easily from their phone.

On promotional goods and office supplies
For example bookmarks, drink coasters and mugs. Whether you give them away or have them for staff and client use, QR codes can work really well on everyday objects.

On your products
You can even add QR codes on your products or packaging.

On portable devices
Get QR code stickers printed to stick on the back of your notebook, tablet or mobile phone for when you’re on the go or visiting clients.

On printables
If you offer downloads such as PDFs and whitepapers on your website, include a QR code on them – particularly if people outside your company are likely to use them as resources or handouts.

With downloads
If you offer zipped resources such as fonts, designs or scripts on your website, include a QR code image in the folder. People are likely to take more notice of an image than a readme file.

For events and locations
Use QR codes on invites or tickers to direct visitors to Google Maps locations, further details about the event/location, or even a Facebook Event listing so you can keep track of who’s going.

For speeches and conferences

If you’re speaking at a conference, put a QR code up on the screen to direct people to your Twitter account or website. If you’re organising a conference, display a QR code before the start for people to easily connect to the venue’s Wi-Fi.

To increase membership
Invite people to sign up for your email list or membership on the spot even when they’re away from their computer.

For instant feedback and real-time communication
Use QR codes for real time ratings and reviews at conferences, restaurants, shows and much more. Give the audience/customers/visitors the ability to comment on the show straight away, and combine with social media for people to interact at a venue.

To offer extras
QR codes present lots of opportunities for offering extra content such as videos, previews, and samples. If you’re in a band or write music reviews, provide a link to the video you’re talking about. At events, you could offer something like a free drink, a small resource pack of useful links, a link to a video of the talk, a song download or similar

To ‘watermark’ images
Adding a mini QR code to your design can direct people to more information about you and your work.

To direct visitors to mobile resources
You can easily direct users to a mobile tool or mobile-friendly website using a QR code in an email or on a blog. It’s also often the easiest way to direct visitors to a specific app for their phone.

For check ins
Directing visitors to social media sites such as Foursquare and Facebook to check in to events helps friends and contacts keep track of who’s arrived.

Brand new file manager launch

We’re always looking at the feedback sent to us from our customers on how we can improve our services. Based on this feedback, we’ve launched a brand new, state of the art file manager on our web hosting platform. The first thing you will notice is how much more attractive it looks compared to the previous version. On top of this, you’ll also be able to navigate around the features more quickly and intuitively.

A quick summary of the improvements:

  • Drag and drop interface.
  • Queue multiple uploads.
  • Visible permissions, along with warning indicator when the user has set permissions that we do not allow.
  • Ability to work with multiple files at the same time (e.g. move 10 files at once with shift+select).
  • All functionality available via right-click and via menu at the top – to allow for better working in mobile browsers.
  • Better navigation.
  • Better handling of archives.

From here you can see your file names, the file’s size, the file type (HTML, PHP etc.), the date it was last modified and the permissions. You can also drag and drop files in to folders, speeding up your file management.

The new GUI at the top gives you access to all your file management options including uploading files, creating new folders, copying and moving files, renaming files and changing a file’s chmod command.

Right clicking on a file brings up a short cut menu…

And the option to edit the file in a ‘Rich editor’
